DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2009
The Seagulls Development Program is a major focus for our club. The development of junior players will ensure the growth of the senior club and hopefully we will see young players from the program filter through to the senior ranks in the future.
The introduction of the U16 Cyril Connell and U18 Mal Meninga Cup statewide competition has given the development program a real presence. The Seagulls Academy sides participated well in the inaugural year. New and improved training initiatives and resources will be added to ensure these teams are competitive.Academy Sponsors
We would like to acknowledge the support of our sponsors of the Seagulls Academy. Their funding enables us to provide a quality program for the benefit of young players throughout the Bayside and Redlands district.
These sponsors include Wynnum Manly Leagues Club; Brisbane Broncos RLFC; Nairn Constructions; Bianco Construction Supplies; Kip McGrath Education Centres; and Harcourts Bayside Property Group
Academy Staff
A big thanks to all Seagulls Academy staff which included Shane McNally, Kristian Wanka, Nigel Roy, Bob Isles, Steve Heymer, Catherine Solah, Wade Bachmann and Laurent Garnier along with development staff from the ARL, QRL and the Brisbane Broncos your support throughout the year was appreciated.Affiliate Junior Clubs
Redlands Junior Rugby League Club returned as an affiliate under the Seagulls Academy program along with Beenleigh and Slacks Creek boosting our junior catchment to approx 2500 juniors. Team coaching sessions and coaching updates were conducted at our junior member clubs. Traditional affiliates the Wynnum Manly Juniors, Capalaba Warriors, Cannon Hill Stars and Stradbroke Island Sharks all had strong years. Congratulations to the Wynnum Manly Juniors U18 Nev Blair Shield premiership winning side. Capalaba also had a strong showing of teams competing in the finals and the Cannon Hill Stars continue to grow with now over 120 registered players and fielding teams in the under 12/15/16 age groups.
For the upcoming 2010 Season and new structure will be in place to take us forward. A major focus will be to improve the Wynnum Manly High Schools excellence program. Development Staff will work closely with the High School to improve the program and provide the best possible development support. Improved support structures will be in place for the U16 & U18 Academy Teams to help them remain competitive and new initiatives will be implemented to strengthen our association with each of our junior affiliates. Bob Isles will take on the role as our Talent Scout focusing his attention on all young players from our development catchment area. His responsibility will be to identify talented young players and bring them to the attention of the development coaches to ensure these young players have a path way from the junior program through to senior football.
In summary 2009 has been another successful year for the Seagulls Academy. Young players continue to progress through the ranks and we look forward to continuing this trend into the future.
