The win on the weekend over the Sunshine Coast was one of the gutsiest performances I have ever been involved with in my 30 years in the game. The Premiers from last year have been in good form recently with some big wins including a 64-0 drubbing over the much improved Pride.
The Wynnum Manly players had plenty of reasons to throw in the towel after being down at half time by 22-6. They showed plenty of resolve to fight their way back in to the game. Early in the piece we were outmuscled as Sunshine Coast scored some early points. I think we were guilty of turning up and hoping for an easy afternoon.
The boys after the break responded by scoring first in the second half. The win will give us some much needed confidence and will allow us to draw on that experience next time we are behind on the score board.
I was really pleased for Jon Grieve who played for Sunshine Coast last year and has taken a while to find his feet here at the Seagulls. To score the winning try particularly against his old club certainly put a smile on his face after the game.
That win sees us sitting third after Redcliffe were beaten by Mackay on the weekend. An upset win for the Pride over Souths has kept us in touch with the leaders who sit on 22 points.
The annual city v country match is on again this weekend in Gympie. Wynnum Manly are well represented with 6 p[layers making the team. They are Willie Scanlan, Shea Moylan, Jake Granville, Jack Afamasaga, Luke Dalziel-Don and Matt Seamark. The game will be televised on ABC Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
