It was a lesson learnt the hard way for the seagulls last Sunday at Davies Park. This competition is extremely tough and if you don’t turn up ready to play you certainly don’t get the result you want.
I knew it was going to be tough with three of our best players away on rep duties. That is no excuse though with Souths having five players away for the same reason.
Our depth was tested even further early in the game with injuries to Jake Granville and Ben Shea. Souths were too strong for us in the contest though with halfback Josh Mccrone pulling the strings for the Magpies. He proved very dangerous with the ball and some well placed kicks that gave our back three no peace. Former Bronco Reece Robinson had good day for the oppositin bagging three tries.
It was a stark reminder for us though and we need to compete a lot harder if we want to remain in touch with the top three sides to be in final contention.
On a positive note Damien Quinn had his first game back for the seagulls after being away for several years playing in the European Super League. Jon Grieve was Wynnum’s best with a tireless display in attack and defence. Twice he chased down Souths Reece Robinson in what looked to be certain runaway tries.
Good luck to the Wynnum boys playing in tonight’s curtain raiser for the State of Origin. Luke Dalziel-Don, Jack Afamasaga and Shea Moylan will represent the residents tonight in Sydney. Let’s hope they take a leaf out of Mals boys book and get a victory over the NSW residents. More importantly for Wynnums sakethey get through the game unscathed and can line up next Sunday at home against the Tweed.
