AFTER two heavy losses, Wynnum Manly got its campaign back on track with a convincing 38-6 victory over the Jets at the North Ipswich Reserve last Sunday.

In their past two outings against the Souths Logan Magpies and the Tweed Heads Seagulls, Wynnum Manly were overrun by their opposition, and in the process had leaked 100 points.

But on Sunday, the steel returned to their defence as they let in only the solitary try in the second half.

Seagulls coach Paul Green said he was happy with the way his team responded to the defeats of the past fortnight, and admitted the team had done “plenty” of work on their defence in the lead-up to the game.

“I was pleased with our defence this week,” Green said.

“It was good to get a win; a win makes all the difference.”

The Seagulls had the match all but wrapped up by half-time after shooting away to a commanding 28-0 lead.

Despite enjoying the majority of possession in the second half, the Jets were only able to break the visiting team's line on one occasion through Tyson Lofipo.

While their defence had been the major cause for concern in recent weeks, their attack had also failed to fire.

But against the Jets, the Seagulls were able to show some point-scoring flair.

Sam Te'o and Vincent Silulu both scored doubles for the Seagulls, who were well served in the first half by big forward Jack Afamasaga.

The former Shark scored a try of his own and was named the Bay FM man-of-the-match award judged by Mike Higgison and Troy Robbins.

“And our attack came off the back of our defence, I think if you are defending well and keeping them out, you have more energy to attack,” Green said.

“Jon Grieve was dangerous in attack and Vinnie Silulu also has come back to the team and scored a few tries, and Jack was good for us in the first half.”

Wynnum has now reclaimed third spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder ahead of Sunday's clash against the Mackay Cutters at BMD Kougari Oval.

“Mackay are a pretty good side, they beat us last time we went up there,” Green said.

“We will be working on our defence again; I think defence will be important for the rest of the year and going into the finals.”
