It was nearly a perfect half of football for the Seagulls last weekend against the Mackay Cutters, at least for 36 min anyway. After completing 19 from 20 sets and dominating field position for much of the half we went to the break being down 12-10.
Experienced NRL players Grant Rovelli and Shannon Gallant combined to lay on 2 tries in the 4 min before half time. Instead of going in to the break full of confidence we found ourselves behind on the score board and lacking energy.
We had our chances in the second half however we failed to build pressure when we had MacKay on their own try line and ended up losing the game 28-16.
The win for Mackay puts them 1 point behind us equal with Sunshine Coast and Northern pride. Redcliffe and Burleigh are also on 21 points giving a real bottleneck with six teams fighting for the last 4 positions in the top six.
Many of those six teams have to play each other or teams higher than them over the coming weeks making for a very interesting race to this years semi final series. With four round s remaining every win is vital.
We are on the road against Central Comets this weekend and our lower grades play Souths Logan. Both our Colts and our Fogs A-Grade are also in a dogfight with other teams to ensure they contest this years finals.
It was great to see many of our former greats here last Sunday when the Seagulls hosted a reunion for the 1975 team. Former Test player Lew Platz and renowned hardman Neville Hornery were on hand to watch the game as the boys got together to share a few laughs and stories.
