The Seagulls had a good opportunity to blow out a few cobwebs on Sunday against an undermanned Ipswich Jets team that failed to strike a blow. The Gulls ran in 8 tries to nil to run out 32-0 winners providing Coach Green a good view of what he has to work with. With the Jets having Qld Cup commitments against the Titans 20's on Friday night we got the best of the rest to give our boys their first taste of football for 2010. They were up against 30 odd Seagulls players all keen to show the coach they are up to the task for Rd1.
The multiple changes and limited time for players made the game a scrappy affair but that is to be expected at this time of year. The humidity also is a factor making catching and passing more difficult. There were plenty of positives to come out of the trial with new signings Shea Moylan and Jack Afamasaga performing very well along with incumbents Will Scanlan, Kurtis Curry(pictured) and Luke Dalziel Don who were also very involved for the limited time they were out there.
Earlier in the day the Colts lined up for their first taste of football running out 28-12 winners. Again this was a scrappy affair but they also had a big contingent of players and coach Daniel Frame was keen to see them all in action. At times their momentum was slowed with plenty of mistakes but the outcome was a positive sign of things to come. We finally have some size in the forwards and hopefully they can set the foundation for their backs to score plenty of tries.
Overall both trials provided a good opportunity for the coaches to see what they have to work with. The most positive thing to come out of both games was the commitment in defence which is something that has been missing here for some time. If we can build on that we will be a strong contender this year.
This week the Seagulls line up in trials against Norths for the Colts and A Grade on Friday night at BMD Kougari Oval and then the Qld Cup team heads out to Dalby for a country exhibition match against the Norths Devils on Saturday Night. Go The Gulls!!
