Ipswich was its own worst enemy in the second half, with poor ball control gifting the Seagulls vital field position. Ipswich invited trouble just four minutes into the second half when fullback Manu Waikato knocked on from a Wynnum chip kick. In the following set, big forward TJ Fualema crashed over to send the Seagulls on their way. When Michael Holcroft scored in the right corner just minutes later and halfback Kurt French landed the difficult sideline conversion, the Seagulls found themselves in front 18-6. It became 20-6 when French slotted an easy penalty goal and then 26-6 when the classy halfback converted his own try. Ipswich scored a late consolation try to raise the spirits of their supporters.

Wynnum Manly was also too strong for Ipswich in the Cyril Connell Cup match, opening their account for the season with an 18-0 victory.
