From the Gulls Nest...
Another gutsy win for our Mal Meninga Cup team leaves them sitting on top of the competition. After last year’s winners North were defeated by Gold Coast Blue on the weekend Wynnum are on their own undefeated. Played in appalling conditions, Wynnum Manly showed plenty of fight to defeat Sunshine Coast sealed by a late try to half back Kurt French. Luke Ferry put in a tireless display in defence and caused plenty of headaches for the Falcons when he carried the football in attack. Both the Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga cup teams host Toowoomba this Saturday at Kougari oval in what should be another entertaining display.
Our trial match preparations were wrapped up on Saturday with a 20 all draw with the Burleigh Bears. After asking our boys to improve their ball handling after last week’s effort against the Devils I was pleased with our performance considering the weather conditions. Burleigh scored right on the bell under the posts with the conversion levelling the scores.
With the trials now out of the way I can breathe a sigh of relief as we came through with no major injury concerns. Whilst trial matches are necessary for preparing your players for competition and trying new combinations there is nothing more frustrating for a coach than to lose a player through injury in a game that counts for nothing other than match fitness.
This Thursday evening the club will host our season launch. For some variety the launch will be held at the Royal Queensland Yacht squadron this year and is a good opportunity for everyone to kick the season off in style.
