There is no lonelier place than a losing dressing room which has been ours for the past 2 weeks. We were all smiles on the weekend though after a good solid 38-6 win over Ipswich on the weekend.
Defence was the theme for us all week after leaking 100 points in our previous 2 matches against Souths and Tweed. It was very satisfying to see that the Seagulls players were committed in that area only limiting Ipswich to a late try.

'Steel' Returns For Seagulls |
|
Tuesday, 20 July 2010 |
|
AFTER two heavy losses, Wynnum Manly got its campaign back on track with a convincing 38-6 victory over the Jets at the North Ipswich Reserve last Sunday.
In their past two outings against the Souths Logan Magpies and the Tweed Heads Seagulls, Wynnum Manly were overrun by their opposition, and in the process had leaked 100 points.
But on Sunday, the steel returned to their defence as they let in only the solitary try in the second half.
Seagulls coach Paul Green said he was happy with the way his team responded to the defeats of the past fortnight, and admitted the team had done “plenty” of work on their defence in the lead-up to the game.

After conceding 100 points in their last two games, Wynnum Manly coach Paul Green has made several changes for the important clash against the last-placed Jets. Damien Quinn’s switch from centre to five-eighth is one of the key changes. The former Celtic star’s move to pivot has squeezed John Peterson out of the side. Wynnum’s two heavy back-to-back losses has the Seagulls in danger of slipping out of fourth spot should they fall to the Jets. Ipswich would need to win at least three of its remaining six games to be any chance of avoiding the dreaded wooden-spoon. Slow starts have plagued the Jets all season and last week was no different with the Pride taking a 14-0 lead into the break. Winger Luke Walker scored two tries in the second half to restore some credibility for the Jets. Walker has been a consistent performer the Jets with 10 tries this year.

It was a disappointing afternoon for the seagulls last Sunday after being soundly beaten 42-16 by Tweed Heads. The Tweed team are a much better team than where they currently sit on the Intrust Super Cup ladder.
Tweed were steered by veteran playmaker Brad Davis who had a great game providing the Tweed team with plenty of direction and a clever kicking game landing 7 from 7.

Tweed Gives Wynnum the Boot |
|
Tuesday, 13 July 2010 |
|
THE Tweed Heads Seagulls completed a weekend of upsets in the Intrust Super Cup with their 42-16 win over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval yesterday.
Wynnum were on the receiving end of a 58-12 hammering at the hands of Souths Logan last weekend – but in front of a good crowd, the home side seemed to have pushed that result out of their minds as they came out strongly to post the first two tries of the afternoon.
But Tweed fought straight back with two tries of their own through Tom Kingston – with one coming from a lunge from dummy half close to the line.
Brad Davis – who had an excellent day with the boot – kicked both conversions to pull his team in front 12-8 and finished the day with seven goals from seven attempts.

Dramatic End to Residents Clash |
|
Thursday, 08 July 2010 |
|
NEW South Wales Residents scored three late tries against a gallant 11-man Queensland side to score a controversial 28-20 win at ANZ Stadium tonight. With 12 minutes remaining in the annual representative clash, the match turned on its head after a brawl erupted.
Queensland was leading 20-16 at that stage and was looking comfortable in its quest for back-to-back Residents victories. But the Queenslanders lost their grip on the game when forwards Darcy Lussick and Kieran Whalley were sin-binned following the altercation.

It was a lesson learnt the hard way for the seagulls last Sunday at Davies Park. This competition is extremely tough and if you don’t turn up ready to play you certainly don’t get the result you want.
I knew it was going to be tough with three of our best players away on rep duties. That is no excuse though with Souths having five players away for the same reason.

BOTH sides may have been without key personnel for the Davies Park clash yesterday – but the Souths Logan Magpies still had the skills and speed to demolish the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 58-12.
The home side ran in 11 tries to two – with most coming off the back of some amazing speed from the Magpies and some fragile Seagulls defence.
Quentin Laulu-Togagae scored the Magpies’ first try in the opening minutes of the game – but there was little to indicate the onslaught that was to follow.

It was a great experience being in camp last week preparing for the annual city v country clash. The game this year was held in Gympie which incidentally were celebrating 100 years of rugby league in the town.
The game generates plenty of interest from the locals and is a good thing for the town and rugby league in general in the area. It is an added incentive to the players in the Queensland cup to strive to play at a higher level. I know the players look forward to it as the game gives them an opportunity to showcase their talents on a bigger stage.
The Qld residents team is selected from this game and that is played as a curtain raiser for the third state of origin in Sydney next week. This gives those players an opportunity to be seen by NRL clubs as all clubs will have recruitment scouts watching that game. In recent years several players from these games have gone on to bigger and better things with names such as Matt Gillett, Trent Hodkinson and Josh Hoffman coming to mind.
Wynnum Manly were well represented in the residents trial with six players selected for City. Of those six players three have been picked to play for the Queensland next week against the NSW residents. Jack Afamasaga, Shea Moylan and Luke Dalziel-Don will play in next week’s lead up game to the state of origin. All three players had strong games in last weekend’s city country match and we wish all of those players the best against NSW
Unfortunately for us though that means we will be without them for our Sunday afternoon clash against competition leaders Souths Logan. The magpies won’t be at full strength either as they have five players that were selected for Queensland. We will still field a competitive team so it will be an opportune time to play them with both teams looking for a valuable two points.
