I was very proud of the way our boys fought their way back in to the match last Sunday against the Ipswich Jets. Being down 22-10 midway in to the 2nd half the team showed enormous determination to claw their way back and give them an opportunity to win the game.
It was the defensive set led by Aoterangi Herangi that was the turning point for the Wynnum Seagulls. The jets, after getting kick reception on their 10 m line could only manage to make 11 m and were forced to kick from deep inside their own half. Everyone lifted from that and we managed to finish over the top of the Ipswich side.

Meet ‘Swoop’ the Seagulls Mascot |
|
Wednesday, 21 April 2010 |
|
Over the past 4 weeks the Seagulls, in conjunction with Quest Community Newspapers, more specifically the Wynnum Herald has been running a ‘Name Our Seagull’ competition. The Seagulls Mascot is an important Icon in the high profile Seagulls Brand and many felt it time that the Mascot had its own identity.
The competition was hotly contested through the Wynnum Herald with many colourful and creative names offered up for the Mascot.
The final decision was a tough one however the judges were unanimous on the name ‘Swoop’ which was chosen by 4 year old Ned Brown from Wynnum.
Entrants were asked to give the Mascot a name and describe why they felt that name was appropriate for the Mascot. Ned named the Seagull Mascot Swoop because ‘Just as Seagulls will swoop down and steal a hot chip from under your nose, the mighty Red and Green Seagulls will swoop down and steal the Premiership in 2010’.The Seagulls would like to thank all of those who participated for the time and thought that they have put into the competition.Watch out for Swoop at all of our home games and keep an eye out for young Ned Brown who will lead the Seagulls Queensland Cup team out on to the field in a home game in the very near future.

Wynnum Manly Vs Ipswich Jets
BMD Kougari Oval , Sunday 18th April 3pm
Suspensions have disrupted the preparations of both teams leading into Sunday’s big clash at BMD Kougari Oval. The Seagulls will need to find a replacement for halfback Matt Seamark, who was unsuccessful in his bid to have a dangerous throw charge overturned. Ipswich will be without hard-working lock Adam Boettcher, who will serve two weeks for a dangerous throw. With both sides coming off last start victories, this should be a keenly contested affair. The Jets showed great courage to come from 16-0 down to beat a star-studded Northern Pride outfit last weekend, while Wynnum Manly produced another professional performance on its way to a gritty 34-22 victory over Tweed Heads. Smith Samau (Ipswich) plays his 50th Cup match. A former Titans winger, Samau has been used closer to the ball in recent weeks and he produced some nice touches at five-eighth against the Pride.

I was worried leading in to last Sundays match against the Tweed so after coming away with the two points on the weekend I can now breathe a sigh of relief. Tweed Heads put probably their best side for the season on the paddock with five eighth and captain Brad Davis a late inclusion into the team.

Round 5 Preview - Tweed Heads vs Wynnum Manly |
|
Friday, 09 April 2010 |
|
Tweed’s season could hinge on the result from Sunday’s vital home clash. Without a win after four attempts, Tweed would find it hard to come back from another loss this week. The Ipswich Jets lost their opening five games of the 2009 season and although they produced a mid-season form revival, they ultimately fell short of a finals berth. Injuries to key players, including captain Brad Davis, have hampered the Tweed in the opening weeks of the competition. The patched up side will need to be at its best to stop Wynnum Manly, one of the form teams of the Intrust Super Cup. Paul Green’s side is in high spirits after rolling heavyweights Souths Logan last weekend. Green will also have the services of Broncos star Ben Te’o after he was dropped from the NRL side.

I was very glad to read that my good mate Darren Lockyer had decided to go around again for this year’s test and state of origin series. I’m sure all Maroons supporters would now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Locky will be there to lead them again.
Those that know him would agree that he is very selfless person and always thinks about the team first. He has been a wonderful servant for the Broncos over a long period of time and no-one would question his commitment to the club.
