The rain threatened all day at BMD Kougari Oval as we hosted 4 games across 3 different competitions.
The heavens finally opened at halftime of our Hostplus Cup game and the rain didn’t stop as we held on for a tough win against a formidable opponent in the Dolphins.
Earlier in the day, the Wynnum Manly Juniors BRL Reserve Grade team won 13-12 over the Brighton Roosters with a late field goal.
Up next, our BRL A Grade team were in a high quality back-and-forth battle with the Redcliffe Dolphins across 80 minutes.
Our boys found themselves down by 10 late in the second half but fought back to lead. Then conceded the lead late, only to score a try in the final 30 seconds to steal victory from the Dolphins, 30-26.
The NRLQ U20s Broncos vs Dolphins match was the 3rd game of the day, with the Dolphins prevailing 34-12.
Hostplus Cup kicked off at 2:10pm and the Seagulls started slowly as the Dolphins were the first to score two tries, however missed both conversions.
James Uesele unfortunately left the field in the 10th minute and didn’t return
Treymain Spry, on Hostplus Cup debut for the Seagulls, got his team on the board in the 25th minute.
Then Cooper Roberts finished off a nice move in the corner, with Kalolo Saitaua breaking a tackle to get him the ball just in time.
The Seagulls were up 10-8 before a late penalty was awarded to Redcliffe to allow them to even it up at halftime, 10-10.
Liam Sutton continued his incredible form to earn a repeat set and then score a try in the 44th minute, after a first half that included two line breaks and a 40/20.
A successful goal kick, also to Sutton, put the Seagulls up 16-10.
Ben Farr then left the field for the Seagulls with a lower leg injury and Chaz Jarvis substituted on at fullback.
That’s 3 games in a row that Jarvis has filled in a position for an injury, first at centre against the Magpies, then wing against the Falcons, and this time fullback against the Dolphins.
Defence was the order of the day as both teams repelled multiple efforts, particularly the Seagulls on their own line.
Then a Liam Sutton penalty goal in the 61st minute extended the Seagulls lead to 18-10.
Sutton and Max Bailey were sent to the sin bin in 67th minute which made it 12 vs 12 on the field.
The Seagulls continued to defend their line with pride and keep the Dolphins out.
Time ticked down and we held on for a significant win, with two key players injured on the day, and keeping the Dolphins scoreless in the second half.
We have a well earned bye next weekend before travelling to Mackay to face the Cutters.
