3 Wins From 3 Against Devils

Weekend Wrap presented by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

The predicted rain stayed away from the Bayside on Saturday as the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls welcomed the Norths Devils from across the river for 3 matches.

The first game saw our Mal Meninga Cup U19 boys go try for try in the first half. However, a stirring speech from coach Daryl Short kicked our Gulls into gear as they ran away in the second half to win 46-22.

Up next were the exciting BMD Premiership team, coming off a surprise loss last game and looking to make amends. The Seagulls were the better team throughout the game but missed a few opportunities to convert their dominance into points. The Seagulls led 10-6 at halftime but fell behind 16-14 in the last 10 minutes. Winger Jo-Anne Visser rescued her team with try in the 65th minute to put the Gulls in front 18-16, which remained the final score.

The Hostplus Cup were the final game of the day with two in-form teams on display. Winger Sione Hopoate got the Seagulls off to a cracking start when he opened the scoring in the 2nd minute. The Devils hit back 6 minutes later before a Seagulls double to Hopoate and Delouise Hoeter extended the lead to 16-12. Matt Milson went in for the home side just before the break to bring the score to 22-12.

The Devils were first to score in the second half before Hoeter scored again for Wynnum to reestablish the 10 point lead. Dolphins-contracted Tesi Niu scored for the Devils in the 75th minute to give them some hope, but the Seagulls ran out 26-20 winners.

Three wins from three games on Saturday for the Seagulls – a very successful day for the Bayside club.

Our next home match is on Sunday 14 April, which is a standalone BMD Premiership Women’s match. Our Hostplus Cup and Mal Meninga teams head to Townsville to play on Saturday afternoon.
