Seagulls See Off Magpies to Reach Prelim. Final

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls made the trip down to Logan Metro to take on the Magpies on Saturday afternoon.

Having played twice this season, with Souths winning both games, the Magpies were rightfully strong favourites to win.

However, buoyed by their 15-14 golden point thriller the weekend before, the Seagulls were not phased by the task that lay ahead.

That was evident when hooker Ollie Pascoe barged his way over from dummy half in just the second minute. Pascoe suffered a dislocated elbow last weekend and miraculously made himself available for selection against Souths.

Pascoe was at it again a few minutes later when he squeezed through a gap enough to offload to debutant Will Parslow who then found fullback Matt Milson who ran away to score near the posts.

After 6 minutes, the Seagulls led 12-0 in a big shock to one of the competition favourites.

The Magpies bounced back through former Seagull Braden Whittaker, before Broncos-contracted junior Israel Leota scored to tie the game up.

Leading into halftime, Brendan O’Hagan put Kalolo Saitaua through a gap and he almost went on to score. After a quick play the ball, O’Hagan demanded the ball and threw a long cutout pass to winger Josh Simm who scored in the corner.

Bailey Hartwig, taking over the kicking duties from the ever-reliable Josh Rogers, converted all three tries in the first half to give the Seagulls an 18-12 lead at the break.

Souths opened the scoring in the second half to tie the game at 18-18, before Matt Milson went in for his second try after some nice lead up work by Stanford Talita.

The Magpies again evened the score to set up a nailbiting finish.

However, with 5 minutes to go, Talita again showed his class as he burst through three tacklers off a set scrum play, and scored a well-deserved try to seal the match for the Seagulls.
