Stradbroke Island Trip Finishes With A Win

Match report presented by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls travelled to North Stradbroke Island over the weekend for our annual Indigenous recognition match.

Our major partners for this game are Deadly Choices, Redland City Council, Yulu-Burri-Ba and Sealink, and once again, we could not have hosted such a successful day without their contributions.

Sunday morning saw 6 junior games take place on Ron Stark Oval, the home of the mighty Straddie Sharks, who also contributed greatly to our day.

The weather was perfect for football, with a light breeze coming off the ocean and not a cloud in the sky.

As the junior games finished, Deadly Choices ambassador Willie Tonga emceed a welcome ceremony for our players and supporters.

Straddie Youth Group performed some traditional dances before each of our stakeholders spoke on the importance of this game.

The Hostplus Cup kicked off at 3pm with a good crowd in attendance.

Kalolo Saitaua seals the game for the Seagulls

Wynnum Manly came firing out of the blocks as Jon Reuben scored 2 tries in the first 9 minutes.

The Falcons then scored 2 tries of their own as the first half turned into an even contest. The half time score read 12-10 Seagulls.

Kalolo Saitaua started the second half in style as he crashed through to score within the first minute.

However, the Falcons then scored two tries and hit the front for the first time in the game after 62 minutes.

The Seagulls wouldn’t give this one away easily though, as Player of the Match Matt Milson scored from dummy half at close range, and then Saitaua grabbed a double to seal the game.

The final score was 30-22 on a sunny Sunday on Stradbroke Island.

Matt Milson was awarded the Lionel Morgan medal for an outstanding game.

Wynnum Manly next take on the Western Clydesdales in Chinchilla on Sunday, before returning home to BMD Kougari Oval for a top of the table clash against Burleigh on Sunday 2 June.
