Weekend Wrap

Weekend Wrap presented by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

Saturday saw our Mal Meninga Cup U19s take on the Burleigh Bears in the semi final of the competition.

The Seagulls were looking forward to the challenge of taking on a team that had won 130-0 the weekend prior.

And considering it was 18-12 to Burleigh at halftime, the Seagulls we well and truly in the game.

Wynnum scored first after half time to get within two points, however a few late second half tries consolidated Burleigh’s lead.

The game ended 34-20 to Burleigh, with the Seagulls putting up a great fight.

Wynnum lost their first 3 games of the season to be last on the ladder, and then proceeded to win 6 of their next 7 games to make the semi final.

A great effort by coach Daryl Short and his playing group for the 2024 season.

On Sunday, our BMD Premiership and Hostplus Cup teams headed down to Piggabeen to face the Tweed Seagulls in the ‘Flockbuster’.

Our BMD Premiership held on for an important win in the context of their season. They needed to win in Round 8 and again this weekend to play finals football.

26-20 was the final score. Jayda Lofipo was named Player of the Match

Up next, our Hostplus Cup team took to the field after a huge downpour. Not long after, the field turned to mud and the players were almost unrecognisable.

Wynnum Manly hit front early and held on to win 40-16. Cory Paix was named Player of the Match and Jon Reuben had a memorable day with 4 tries on the wing.

The Seagulls are back at home this Saturday for 2 matches in the BMD Premiership and Hostplus Cup.

Our women take on the Sunshine Coast at 1:20pm and then our Hostplus Cup team take on the Ipswich Jets at 3pm.
