Both Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership teams made the trip to Mackay on Friday ahead of their respective matchups on Saturday afternoon.
Our boys were looking to continue their momentum after 3 wins in a row. While our girls were after their second win of the season, following last week’s breakthrough.
Our BMD Premiership team let in a couple of early tries but then got back into the game through their Brisbane Broncos connections Azalleyah Maaka and Lauren Dam.
We headed into the break 12-8 down at halftime.
However we shot out of the blocks to start the second half with quick tries to Tayla Sykes and Tameka Barnes within the first 5 minute of play.
That put us up 20-12, a lead we held for over 20 minutes before the Cutters scored in the 61st minute.
Heartbreakingly, the Cutters scored with the last play of the game to steal victory. Our girls are looking better each game and their second win isn’t far away.
In between games, the Cutters held a ceremony for BMD’s Indigenous Round and paid tribute to local Indigenous culture in the region.
Our Hostplus Cup boys entered into a tough battle to start the game, having to repel the Cutters multiple times on our line.
It was Liam Sutton who broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, with a nice step off both feet to find a gap in the defensive line.
Delouise Hoeter was next to score and it started through Liam Sutton yet again.
Sutton through a cutout ball to Cooper Roberts on the wing who broke the line and kicked inside. A nice pick up and pass from Chaz Jarvis to Hoeter saw him run in under the posts.
Liam Sutton capped a fantastic first half with his second try in the 30th minute. This time he chased through a Josh Berryman kick and outjumped the fullback to score.
Seagulls up 18-4 at the halftime break.
The second half started much the same, with right-side dominance from the Seagulls.
Delouise Hoeter had his second try with 3 minutes of kickoff, this time through a short side play on the last tackle after another high energy set from the Seagulls.
Hoeter has his hattrick a few minutes later after a Josh Berryman kick ricocheted from Luke Gale to Cooper Roberts, who passed for Hoeter to fall over the line.
5/5 from the tee for Liam Sutton opened up a 30-4 lead with 30 minutes to go.
To the Cutters credit, they didn’t stop fighting, with tries in the 58th and 68th minutes.
However, the Seagulls held on for a 30-14 win away from home that consolidates their 3rd position on the ladder.
This Sunday, both teams return to BMD Kougari Oval to play against the Jets and Clydesdales respectively.
