Rugby league fans across QLD have eagerly waited to see who their team will play at home and away, none more so than our passionate BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls supporters.

February 18 will see the commencement of the Harvey Norman U19s, Mal Meninga Cup U18s and Cyril Connell Challenge U16s competitions. These will each run for a 7 week season followed by a semi final and grand final.

Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership will kick off on March 11, with the Seagulls hosting Round 1 at BMD Kougari Oval against Mackay Cutters in both competitions.

Hastings Deering Colts will commence on April 22, round 6 of Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership, in a home game against the Northern Pride.

Both Hostplus Cup and Hastings Deering Colts finish their regular seasons on the weekend of 19-20 August, with special rounds throughout the year including Rivalry Round, Anzac Round, Indigenous Round, Country Week and Turn To Me Round.

Given the addition of the Western Clydesdales to the Hostplus Cup competition, the season has been extended to 22 rounds. This will give the Seagulls 9 home games, 10 away games, 1 Country Week and 2 byes.

2023 Seagulls vs Broncos Trial

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls will take on the Brisbane Broncos in a pre-season trial match to kickstart each of their 2023 campaigns.

The teams will clash at BMD Kougari Oval on Saturday 4 February at 4pm.

Regularly a sell out event, fans will be treated to multiple matches across the day involving the McDonalds Seagulls Academy teams, before the main event later in the afternoon.

The Brisbane Broncos made a significant improvement in 2022 and will look to take the next step into the top 8 in 2023, with an exciting roster across the park.

With a large turnover of players, and Mat Head as the incoming Hostplus Cup coach, the Seagulls will be eager to test themselves against their elite opponent. Many players have come to the Gulls for an opportunity to progress to the NRL, and what better way to start the season ahead than a strong performance against our affiliate club.

Seagulls CEO Wayne Weekes said hosting the Broncos in Wynnum is a fantastic opportunity for our team and our supporters.

“We’re looking forward to a huge 2023 season across all our teams. To welcome the Broncos to BMD Kougari Oval in the pre-season is a privilege for our supporters and a great opportunity for our players to see where they’re situated leading into an important year ahead. Our fans love this game each season, and we can’t wait to see the ground packed to the rafters.”

Broncos and Seagulls supporters will have access to food trucks, prize draws and merchandise from both teams on a bumper day on the Bayside.

General admission tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for kids aged 12-17yrs, and free for kids 11yrs and under. Purchase your tickets here!

Due to our limited capacity at BMD Kougari Oval, this event will sell out. We encourage everyone to purchase their tickets early to avoid disappointment.

We can’t wait to see you at BMD Kougari Oval on February 4 to kick off our season!

Seagulls Welcome George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals to the Club

The BMD Wynnum Wynnum Manly Seagulls are proud to announce George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals (GHMF) as a Premier Sponsor of the club for the next two years.

George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals have been present in the Bayside community for many years, and from initial discussions it was clear that they would be great supporters of the Seagulls.

Caleb Terrill, Location Manager for Cleveland, is very excited to undertake this partnership, saying, “first and foremost, here at George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals, we love Rugby League!  So much so, Wally Lewis has been a brand ambassador for us for a few years now!

A big part of why we have partnered with the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls, is firstly because we want our community to understand, we are people first, and funeral directors second.  When getting to understand where we wanted to invest in our community, we looked in detail, at what represents community.  The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls, were a stand out in this regard.  Community and tribalism is so clearly in their DNA, and frankly, we are honoured to be partnering with such an outstanding club, with such a proud history.

Lastly, George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals has been in the Wynnum community and Brisbane for many decades now, so this is about making strong connections that will build our fabric as a community even more.

We are here to help in the worst time of your life, but we will also see you at the game, and around the club, because we love rugby league and we are just people after all!”

As part of the partnership with GHM Funerals, should any supporter need their services they will receive a $250 discount with the mention of the Seagulls. View their website here: https://www.ghmfunerals.com.au/locations/wynnum/

Keep an eye out for the George Hartnett team at the club next season as they’re enjoying the footy!

Kitron Laka Becomes a Seagull in 2023

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls are excited to welcome Kitron Laka to their Hostplus Cup squad for 2023.

The Papua New Guinean powerhouse has recently moved to Wynnum ahead of preseason training and is looking forward to a big season ahead.

Kitron said, “I am very excited to be here at the Seagulls. Not too many players make it out of the Digicel Cup to the Hunters, and then to a club as big as this. I know that I am one of the lucky ones and I want to make my family proud.”

Kitron said he was excited for the opportunity to play for the Seagulls and looks forward to cementing his spot in the Hostplus Cup team.

As a second-row / centre, Kitron is blessed with speed and power, and also built very impressively. He was at his destructive best against the Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval in Round 14, where he scored a try in a dominant display by the Hunters.

Kitron Laka playing for the PNG Hunters

“My first goal is to play consistently for the Seagulls. And then I would like to pick up an NRL contract”, Kitron said. “I am making good progress in with rugby league career, having jumped up each level within a year or two, so the next step for me is to play well and be noticed by an NRL club.”

“I still have a lot of friends at the Hunters, and I look forward to when we play against them next season. But I’ll be doing my best to beat them.”

Preseason training will commence for the men this Saturday with plenty of new faces in the squad assembled by incoming coach Mat Head.

“Hello to all our valuable supporters and sponsors, I would like to pass on my sincere gratitude for the messages of support and positive comments relating to my appointment as the new CEO of BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls. I can honestly say I am very honoured, humbled, and excited to play a part in the future chapters of this great club.

Having a long history in the game and operating in many culturally rich rugby league environments myself, the heritage and passion of Wynnum Manly Seagulls Sponsors and supporters has certainly not been lost in translation, and it’s something I respect and cherish.

I would also like to congratulate Former CEO Hanan Laban, former Hostplus Cup Coach Adam Brideson, and former Academy Manager Michael Dobson for their successful contribution to the Wynnum Manly Seagulls club and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

Our club is currently experiencing a period of change with a new CEO (Wayne Weekes), Hostplus Cup Head Coach (Mathew Head), and Academy Manager (Jon Buchanan). I can assure all our sponsors and supporters that the Seagulls have recruited experienced and professional staff who are passionate in their roles, their club, and driven for future success.

We look forward to getting to know and work with you all in the very near future. If you see me around, please don’t hesitate to introduce yourselves.”
