Dominant Win on Straddie

Our annual Indigenous recognition on North Stradbroke Island / Minjerribah was held on Saturday at the Straddie Sharks.

Even the torrential rain couldn’t ruin our day, one we’d been preparing for collectively for months.

The Straddie Sharks kicked off the day with three junior games against Easts Juniors in U7, U9 and U11.

Our BMD Premiership squad also travelled over for their final hitout before Round 1 on June 15.

The Straddie Youth Group then provided the Welcome to Country and dance ceremony to promote the Indigenous culture of the island.

We were lucky to get a small break in the rain while the ceremony was on, and just as it finished, the rain poured again.

Both Hostplus Cup teams entered the field to torrential rain and it never let up for the rest of the day.

In an exciting development for the Seagulls, Liam Sutton, who had recently joined the squad from the Newcastle Knights system, would make his debut for the club.

The opening period of the game followed a predictable path, as both teams battered each other through the middle and struggled to find any space on a soggy field.

Will Parslow was the first on the scoresheet as he dived over in the corner under heavy pressure in the 27th minute.

Kalolo Saitaua was next to score in the 35th minute as he bustled his way over from 15m out, breaking multiple tackles in his distinct running style.

The Seagulls took a 12-0 lead into halftime.

Chaz Jarvis scored in the 47th minute, before Tieran Ross and Ben Farr sealed the game in the 65th and 76th minutes respectively.

Luke Gale resumed the goalkicking duties, slotting 2 from 5 conversions and also 2 penalty goals. A terrible day to be a goalkicker.

It was a dominant defensive performance in the wet as the Capras rarely challenged the Seagulls line.

28-0 was the final score, as the Seagulls once again proved North Stradbroke Island a happy hunting ground, having only lost once in 11 games.
