The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls have gone down to the Burleigh Bears in the Intrust Super Cup.
The Seagulls had a number of opportunities early but were overrun by a rampant Bears outfit in warm conditions on the Gold Coast.
The match started an even affair with the Seagulls running into a stiff breeze, but holding their own early. The Seagulls then appeared to be first on the board through new recruit Kauri Aupouri, only for the Video Referee to controversially overturn the on field decision.
It took 20 minutes for the first points to be registered, when Burleigh looked close to securing a 40/20 through halfback Jamal Fogarty. Seagulls fullback Junior Pauga desperately threw the ball infield, only to find the waiting Bears ready to grab it and tip on to Jamal Fogarty for the first try of the match.
This was quickly followed in the next set by a nice inside ball from Fogarty to fullback Curtis Rowe for the Bears to take the early led 12-0 in a matter of minutes. The remainder of the half remained even with both sides coming close on a number of occasions.
The Bears came out in the second half the better and were first to score with a nice kick from Josh Rogers putting Blake Leary over in the 49th minute. A Bears penalty goal five minutes later extended the lead to 20-0.
The Seagulls got on the board through replacement hooker, Tristan Hope, in the 61st minute with a quick tap and powerful drive over the line. Aupouri converted to bring the score to 24-6.
Late tries from Sami Sauiluma and Will Evans saw the score blow out to 34-6.
Burleigh Bears 34 (Tries: Jamal Fogarty 21′, Kurtis Rowe 24′, Blake Leary 48′, Kurtis Rowe 57′, Sami Sauiluma 67′, Will Evans 73′; Goals: Fogarty 4/6) defeated Wynnum Manly Seagulls 6 (Tries: Hope 61′; Goals: Aupouri 1/1)
