It is the moment all Seagulls fans have been waiting for since 4:57pm on September 29, 2019.
Round one is here and the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls take on the Burleigh Bears in a grand final replay to open the new Intrust Super Cup season. The coaches and players will say that the ‘past is the past,’ but there is no doubting both teams will want to make a statement early on in the competition.
With a 12:10pm kick-off time at Pizzey Park Burleigh and the forecast weather to above 25 degrees the game is sure to show who has been working hard in pre-season.
There are a number of great matchups across the park with Seagulls’ big man, Lloyd Perrett and Bears captain Luke Page going toe to toe up front, while in the backline a pair of new five-eights square off in Kauri Aupouri (Seagulls) taking on Josh Rogers (Bears) which is sure to add a different dynamic to both sides from when they last met.
If both impressive packs can do their job then it may just come down to a battle of the little men and this week we take a look at this key match-up.
Key Match-up: Sam Scarlett vs Jamal Fogerty
He was the man that led the league in assists in 2019 and Sam Scarlett will need to be front and centre again if the Seagulls are to be victorious on Sunday – and this season.
On the other side Jamal Fogerty is coming off an impressive 2019 where he led Burleigh to a premiership and recently re-signed with the Gold Coast Titans. He will again be the focal point to their attack.
Hot, early season games often produce mixed results and it may just be the halfback who can control the tempo of with their kicking game that can be the difference this week. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure this Sunday will see two of the heavyweights of the competition kick off the season with a bang!
