The Intrust Super Cup will return to Stradbroke Island when the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls play against the Tweed Heads Seagulls at North Stradbroke Island’s Ron Stark Oval on Saturday, July 7.
The Seagulls’ Indigenous Recognition game will be televised live on Channel Nine at the kick off time of 1.10pm and headlines the QRL’s Indigenous Round.
The match will recognise the Quandamooka Peoples whilst showcasing Stradbroke Island’s natural beauty.
There will be a number of fun activities for kids and families also taking place on the day such as a free NRL Development clinic, inflatable games, interactive local stalls, health information and check-up clinics.
Seagulls’ Chief Executive Officer Hanan Laban is excited to continue the tradition of playing games on the island.
“Our Indigenous Recognition match on Stradbroke Island has been a wonderful community success since it was started in 2014.
Our club loves going over to the island and seeing the young smiling kids running around in the development clinics and promoting the natural beauty of the Redlands.
It also serves a positive purpose to the community in promoting health awareness and healthy choices and recognising indigenous culture.”
For the fourth time since its inception, Deadly Choices and the Redland City Council continue their support for the Stradbroke Island fixture as the event’s major partners.
Adrian Carson, CEO of the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, the governing body of Deadly Choices said the day is about promoting healthy eating and active participation for all ages.
“At Deadly Choices we educate our youth about the negative impacts of social activities such as smoking and drinking alcohol, while also advocating positive schooling behaviour.
This makes our partnership with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls a perfect fit, by allowing us to highlight critical health services to local communities in and around the Redlands Shire and right across south-east Queensland.
Our annual showcase at Straddie also provides a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the cultural significance and valued contributions of the local Quandamooka people as traditional owners and custodians of the land.”
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the game was an outstanding opportunity to promote community values and highlight the Redlands as a premiere events and tourism destination.
“Leading up to NAIDOC Week, this game is a wonderful chance to showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, particularly those of the Noonuccal, Nughi and Gorenpul Peoples of Quandamooka Country.
“Redland City tourism will also be at the visual forefront for viewers and attendees with the stunning Moreton Bay setting as backdrop for the game.”
The day is set to kick off from 9am with an NRL Development clinic for kids and family activities. Further updates and information will be posted by the Seagulls in the lead up to the day.
