Scanning the community for women’s football talent

The Wynnum Manly Seagulls are set to take the next step in the evolution of their Women’s Football Program.

After a successful program launch in 2021 entering the Harvey Norman U19’s competition, this offseason will take the Seagulls Women’s Program to the next level. 2022 will see an additional women’s team established, in the QRL’s BHP Premiership, to further solidify the club as an elite sporting pathway for both men and women.

As part of this evolution, the club are working with Queensland X-Ray to scan the local community and identify talent to join the Seagulls program across the two squads. The next stage of this identification process is a talent combine, to be held later in September. The club are seeking expressions of interests from female athletes aged 17 and above, who are interested in playing Rugby League at an elite level.

The talent combine is designed to expose athletes from non-traditional rugby league backgrounds to the game. Whilst previous playing experience is great, the club is also looking for athletes across other sports who might have the skills and capacity to learn the game and quickly excel. Together with Queensland X-Ray, we are excited to find rugby league talent that may not have been seen before.

If you think you have what it takes, please register your interest here. If you think a friend has what it takes, tag them on our Instagram and share this Facebook event. We want to get the word out to as many promising athletes as we can.

Female participation in rugby league continues to rise rapidly, and the opportunity to look beyond existing junior clubs is an exciting moment for the Seagulls. The support of all of our women’s program partners allows the club to help break down some of the historic barriers to participation.

The Seagulls participation in the QRL’s major competitions provides a structured pathway to high level performance. Our senior affiliation with the Brisbane Broncos also opens up opportunities for athletes to be exposed to the NRLW. The entire women’s program will go beyond just competing in their respective seasons, by helping to continue the club’s legacy as a pillar of the bayside community.

The opportunity to demonstrate pathways for young females to continue participation in sport and achieve at the highest level is a key foundation of the Wynnum Manly strategic plan. This talent combine, proudly supported by Queensland X-Ray, will help the club further that mission and identify role models for future female athletes across all levels of the game.
