Read More Seagulls Ensure Female Footy Pathway BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls are excited to announce a further progression of our junior to senior pathways. Our current BMD Premiership squad will now feed non-playing squad members to our affiliate Wynnum Manly Juniors, to enable sides to be entered in the Women’s Premier and Reserve Grade competitions. This ensures our female athletes have competitive football while retaining our local talent and providing a real and visible pathway for participating girls at Wynnum Manly Juniors. We are looking forward to our BMD Premiership women getting pre-season training underway this week, and seeing this newly-formed pathway in action from June onwards. Mal Meninga Cup Season Finishes In Cairns Despite winning their last two games, our Mal Meninga Cup U19 team just fell short of finals football in 2025. In a hotly contested competition, with dozens of NRL-contracted players spread across different teams, our boys played admirably through a bad run of injuries. Using 32 players across 9 games, with most being bottom-age, showed just how many injuries disrupted their season. After a strong start with 2 wins in a row, the next 4 games were against the best teams in the competition, which proved too much. We scored a couple of important wins at the end of the season to finish 8th on the table, with finals consisting of the Top 6 teams. We look forward to welcoming back the eligible players in 2026, and aim to transition as many players as possible into our Hostplus Cup and BRL A Grade squads as their development continues at the Seagulls. Some players will make the step up to the BRL squad immediately and push for a Cup debut later in the season. Well done to Blake Trace and his coaching team for your efforts across the season. The game started in sunny conditions and the Pride flew out of the gate with a try in the 5th minute. Further tries followed in the 15th and 22nd minutes and all of a sudden, the Seagulls were down 18-0. Captain Brendan Frei grabbed one back for Wynnum Manly in the 30th minute, before the Pride scored again before halftime to head into the break at 22-6. The heavens opened and torrential rain started pouring down in a typical North QLD tropical shower. But the wet weather didn’t stop Seagulls winger Ron Philitoga from taking a classic catch above his head from a Jock Madden kick, and beat his winger to score. Jamie Hill then dived over untouched off a Chaz Jarvis short ball to bring the score to 22-18 to the Pride. The Pride then scored out wide to go in front by 8 points with 14 minutes remaining. James Uesele barged his way over under the posts of a Cameron Bukowski short ball and the Seagulls got to 2 points behind with 8 minutes to go. Then with 3 minutes remaining, Jock Madden found his winger again with another cross-field dime as Ron Philitoga outjumped his opposite number and scored. Seagulls in front 28-26. The boys from Wynnum Manly held on in the final 2 minutes, which included a trysaver from Jock Madden as he tackled a Pride player over sideline who was on a breakaway run. An important 2 points on a difficult away trip. Up next, we travel to Tweed on Easter Saturday for our rescheduled Round 1 game against the Seagulls. Following that game, we retrun home on Saturday 26th of April to face the Ipswich Jets, who will boast a few former Seagulls, in what should be a tough clash. The Wynnum Manly Juniors BRL Reserve Grade won 30-6 over Souths Magpies, before our BRL A Grade team won 42-10, also over Souths Magpies. Up next, the Cyril Connell Cup U17 played their semi final against Burleigh Bears. The two best teams in the South East pool were both loaded with NRL-contracted players in what promised to be an entertaining match. The Seagulls had an 18-4 lead with 14 minutes remaining before Burleigh fought back to score 3 tries in 9 minutes and flip the game. Heading into the final seconds, Burleigh led 20-18, before giving away a penalty after the siren. Lachie Hooker kicked the penalty goal from the sideline in front of a rapturous crowd to send the game into golden point extra time. Unfortunately, Burleigh scored off the back of a penalty and won the game 24-20. Our Seagulls U17s had a fantastic season, only losing one game by a field goal, before going down in the semi final in golden point. The Mal Meninga teams played next, with the Seagulls looking to get back in the winner’s circle after a few losses in a row. A barnstorming performance saw them run away with the game, winning 38-12 over the CQ Capras. Leading into the Hostplus Cup match between the Seagulls and Souths Magpies, both teams observed a minute’s silence in remembrance of Mitch Cronin after being led onto the field by his family. Souths sported names such as Marty Taupau, Tyson Smoothy, Ben Te Kura, Anthony Milford, Coby Black and Blake Mozer in what was a formidable lineup. Wynnum Manly scored off the opening set after a Brendan Frei break to set up Cameron Bukowski next to the posts. The momentum continued in the Seagulls direction from that moment onwards as Souths were never really in the contest. The Magpies managed to get a couple of tries back, but the Seagulls led 24-10 heading into the break with further tries from Ron Philitoga, a second to Bukowski and then Jock Madden. Beni Allen opened the scoring after the break, before Jamie Hill and Oskar Enasio also crossed the line. Ben Far sealed the outstanding performance with a double within 3 minutes, as Wynnum Manly secured a 54-20 victory over a Broncos-stacked Souths Logan Magpies team. Jock Madden kicked 9/9 conversions in a great day for the Seagulls both on and off the field. Chaz Jarvis also made his Hostplus Cup debut for the Seagulls and will feature heavily throughout the season. The team travel to Cairns to play the Northern Pride this Sunday at 2:10pm.
