Iona College to host historic Intrust Super Cup match

For the first time in the rich histories of Iona College and the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, Fr Davine Oval will host an Intrust Super Cup match between the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Tweed Heads Seagulls on March 28.

The match will provide an opportunity for the Iona network of students, staff, Old Boys and families, to connect with the Wynnum Manly community and the passionate Seagulls fanbase, in cheering on the Gulls in the annual ‘Flockbuster’ clash.

Iona College will be hosting the Chook Pen on the day, with a special area designated to the Seagulls’ faithful to allow the Wynnum Manly players to feel right at home.

The Chook Pen holds special significance to the College, as Anthony “Chook” Schweitzer, the passionate Seagulls supporter whom the pen is named after, is an Iona Old Boy.

Iona College Rector, Fr Michael Twigg OMI said the Seagulls and College have had a connection for a long time and this match will take it to the next level.

“Iona and the Seagulls have had a great relationship for many years, and this is taking to the next step by coming back to the College (for their Round 2 match against Tweed Heads Seagulls),” said Fr Twigg.

“We’re looking forward to replicating the Chook Pen, we think that will appeal to the local community, and after the COVID-19 period, everyone wants to gather together again.

“Iona College is 63 years old, Wynnum Manly is older (celebrating their 70th year in 2021), and it is historic that it is the first time that there has been a game there.

“The relationship has been there for a long time, there have been many former students who have gone on to play (for Wynnum Manly), and there will be students playing on the day as well (across the grades for the Seagulls).

“Whilst this is a historic match, we’re hoping that this is a new tradition (between the two community focussed organisations).”

Wynnum Manly Seagulls Chief Executive Officer Hanan Laban is equally as excited to host the match.

“In our 70th year, it is truly special that for the first time in our history, we are able to take an Intrust Super Cup match to Iona College.

“This isn’t just an opportunity for the College to connect with the Seagulls, but also a chance for both of our organisations to engage with our community and bring people together again after a challenging period.

“The match is a free event, operated under Queensland Health’s COVID-19 protocols, and we welcome the Bayside community to support the Seagulls in Wynnum on this historic day.

“We have a number of Iona Old Boys playing across the grades on the day, and we are hopeful that this is the start of a regular fixture on the calendar.”
