Seagulls Get Wins Over Phins in Rivalry Round

A huge crowd flocked to BMD Kougari Oval yesterday afternoon to witness one of the best rivalries the Queensland Rugby League competitions have to offer.

It was the battle of the Bayside teams, as the Redcliffe Dolphins made the trip to Wynnum Manly for Hastings Deering Colts and Hostplus Cup matches.

Redcliffe had only lost once this season in the Colts competition, but started slowly, with the Seagulls scoring from their firs set. The home team’s momentum continued throughout the first half as we took a 28-6 lead into the break.

Redcliffe then put on 4 tries in 12 minutes to get within 2 points of the Seagulls, before Tyree Bowman extended the Seagulls lead to 34-26.

Our Gulls held on to win 34-30 in a thrilling win against a very good team.

The Hostplus Cup match was up next, broadcast on Kayo and 9Now, where Wynnum Manly were buoyed by the inclusions of Jock Madden and Xavier Willison (Broncos contracted players from Norths), and Gerard Beale (signed mid-week) on Old Boys Day at home.

This time it was Redcliffe with the hot start as they broke out to a 16-0 lead after 24 minutes.

The BMD Kougari Oval home crowd was willing the Seagulls on to get back into the match, and they replied through Gideon Gela Mosby in the 28th minute.

4 minutes later, Josh Rogers scored under the posts from a Jock Madden grubber kick. Before Deine Mariner made a 55m jinking run off the ensuing restart set to tie the game at 16-16.

The Dolphins scored twice after halftime to restore their 10 point lead, with under 20 minutes to go.

Jock Madden stood up again as he put Josh Rogers through a gap and backed up to collect the return pass and score under the posts.

Captain Luke Gale then tied the game in the 73rd minute when Madden passed inside to Kalolo Saitaua, who then reversed back inside to put Gale under the posts.

The Seagulls hit the front with Josh Rogers converted the try, their first time in the lead all game.

28-26 was enough for the Seagulls to hold on and seal our 6th win in a row.

Thank you to all Seagulls fans who came out to BMD Kougari Oval and cheered our boys on. Your support is very much appreciated.

Both Seagulls teams have earned their bye this weekend, before the Hostplus Cup team make the trip to Cairns on Saturday 8 July.

Seagulls Make It Five In A Row

BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls made the trip up the range to face the Western Clydesdales on Saturday in their 4th away game in a row.

Coming off 4 wins in a row, the Seagulls were confident but also wary of a Clydesdales team that have shown a never-say-die attitude in their first Hostplus Cup season.

Our Hastings Deering Colts kicked off in the earlier game at 1:15pm.

Down 28-12 at halftime, our boys stormed back to 28-28, before having a man sent off and then scoring again to lead 34-28. The Clydesdales scored to tie the game with a few minutes left, before a Jordan Davies field goal put the Seagulls in front 35-34.

From the ensuing kickoff, the Clydesdales retrieved the ball and had a set attacking the Seagulls line. A final play grubber to the in-goal was pushed dead and the Seagulls ran out 35-34 victors in a wild game of football.

The Hostplus Cup match kicked off at 5:15pm in front of a good crowd on a cold night in Toowoomba.

Seagulls captain Luke Gale was first on the scoresheet after bursting through a hole and finishing next to the posts in the 4th minute.

Brendan O’Hagan then snuck over the line from close range.

Toowoomba had come to play though, jumping out to a 16-12 lead. However, Deine Mariner put the Seagulls back in the lead as he bounced off defenders to get over the line.

Cooper Page Wilson then bashed his way over to score next to the posts, a great reward for the big man who has been very strong since his return from a hamstring injury.

The Clydesdales scored a late first half try to narrow the gap, with the Seagulls heading into the break up 24-22.

The mountain men then hit the front early in the second half and led for the next 10 minutes, before Gideon Gela Mosby received a pass on the attacking 40m line and exploded through a gap to weave his way into a diving finish under the posts.

This try swung the momentum back to the Seagulls, who then sealed the game with 2 more tries in the next 10 minutes. Ever-reliable fullback Matt Milson, and five-eighth Josh Rogers pushed the Seagulls to a 42-26 lead with less than 15 minutes remaining.

This was enough to hold the Clydesdales at bay, with the final score 42-32 to the Seagulls.

Up next is the Rivalry Round clash against the Redcliffe Dolphins at BMD Kougari Oval this Sunday. Colts at 12pm and Hostplus Cup at 2:10pm on what will be a huge Old Boys Day for the Seagulls. This game will also be broadcast for free on Kayo Freebies, 9Now and QPlus.tv.

Seagulls Post Big Win Against Cutters

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls headed to Mackay on Saturday to take on the Cutters.

Our Hostplus Cup and Hastings Deering Colts both made the trip as they looked to maintain their positions in the top half of the ladder.

The Colts were up first and stared well to eventually record a 56-6 win.

Hosptlus Cup kicked off at 6pm in front of a decent crowd at BB Print Stadium.

Delouise Hoeter opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he beat his man and dragged two defenders over to score in the corner.

4 minutes later Hoeter was in again after he leapt above his opposite number and came crashing down with a Josh Rogers kick.

Brendan O’Hagan then caught a ricocheted kick to score near the posts, before Josh Simm went over out wide 5 minutes later.

After 27 minutes, the Seagulls led 24-0.

Kalolo Saitaua scored one right on the half time buzzer after a short dropout from the Cutters bounced fortunately for our #14.

After halftime, Josh Rogers was the beneficiary of another good bounce when Deine Mariner kicked through for his five-eighth to score.

Rogers turned provider for Bailey Hartwig 4 minutes later when a short ball put Hartwig through to score.

The Seagulls led 38-0 after 48 minutes.

Ollie Pascoe was next on the score sheet when he dived over from dummy half, before Hoeter grabbed his hattrick with another trademark skip to the outside and crash over the line.

That was the 50 points up the for Gulls after 61 minutes.

Saitaua and Pascoe both brought up their second try in the 66th and 70th minutes to ice a dominant performance on the road.

The final score was 62-0 to the Seagulls.

There was many good performances, however Corey Jensen and Keenan Palasia were very strong returning from the Broncos for the game. While Hoeter, Mariner, Cooper Page Wilson and Darius Farmer were very tough to handle for the Cutters defence. Josh Rogers was named Bartons Player of the Match as he continues his good run of form.

Up next are the Western Clydesdales in Toowoomba on Saturday evening, before we return home against the Redcliffe Dolphins on Sunday 25 June for XXXX Rivalry Round.

Seagulls Secure Important Win In Townsville

BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls made the trip north on Saturday to take on the Townsville Blackhawks.

Our second farthest away trip of the season, this was an important game for the Seagulls to maintain some recent momentum.

In the earlier game, our Hastings Deering Colts went down 32-18 in a tough game where they lost 2 players to significant injury.

The Hostplus Cup team were buoyed by the late inclusions of Keenan Palasia and Deine Mariner, who had played for the Brisbane Broncos the week earlier in New Zealand.

In support on the sideline were 35 of the Seagulls valued sponsors, who made the trip up to support our team.

The Blackhawks opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Gideon Gela Mosby hit back with an intercept and ran 65m to score in the 20th minute.

A similar few minutes occurred towards the end of the first half when Townsville scored in the 36th minute before Josh Simm dove over for a spectacular finish on the halftime buzzer.

Josh Rogers then converted from the sideline, right in front of our sponsors area, to tie the scores at 12-12 at the break.

After halftime, an early penalty to Rogers saw the Seagulls move to 14-12 in front.

Then prop forward Jack Martin barged his way over for 2 tries in 8 minutes to blow the game apart. At that point, the Seagulls were leading 26-12.

Bailey Hartwig and Josh Rogers sealed the game when they each scored in the final 10 minutes, closing out a 38-12 win.

Rogers was perfect with the boot again, kicking 7/7 in drizzly overcast conditions.

Wynnum Manly Take The Chips In Round 11

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls made the trip down the coast on Saturday to take on the in-form Tweed Seagulls at Piggabeen Sports Complex.

Tweed had earlier defeated Wynnum Manly in Round 5 at BMD Kougari in the first edition of the ‘flockbuster’ in 2023, and the Bayside boys were out for revenge.

Some significant team changes occurred in the week leading into the game. The Broncos took an extended squad over to New Zealand for their match against the Warriors, meaning Josh Rogers was the only Broncos-contracted player to join us on game day.

While the Gold Coast Titans, with the bye in NRL’s Round 13, dropped extra players into the Tweed team for the game.

Wynnum Manly faced a big challenge on paper, but were not overawed by the occasion and came out swinging from the first whistle.

Ollie Pascoe opened the scoring in the 9th minute when he scurried over from dummy half 10m out.

Tweed hit back with 2 tries in 7 minutes to hit the front 12-6.

This triggered Wynnum Manly to switch into top gear, going onto score through Josh Rogers, Josh Simm and Matt Milson in the next 11 minutes to blow the game open.

Josh Rogers breaks through to score

Wynnum Manly took a 24-12 lead into the break against a shocked Tweed team.

Josh Rogers, playing his best game of the season, and standing tall in the absence of the other Broncos-contracted players, scored again in the 59th minute.

Tweed scored 5 minutes later to give themselves some hope. However Wynnum Manly defended incredibly well to keep Tweed at bay.

Debutant Stanford Talita put the cherry on top when he scored in the final minute to seal the game.

Josh Rogers completed his Bartons Player of the Match performance by kicking the last goal from the sideline in front of his teammates.

Rogers scored 2 tries, made 2 line breaks, ran for 140m, broke 9 tackles and kicked 7/7 goals.

This was a great win by the boys from Wynnum Manly to even the ledger with Tweed this season and confirm their spot in the Top 8.

Seagulls Take Down Hunters

It was a tough afternoon for the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls as they hosted the PNG Hunters in Round 10.

Always a physical battle between the two, the boys from PNG ran hard and tackled harder in an effort to replicate last season’s upset win over the Seagulls.

Wynnum Manly started the better of the two teams, with Delouise Hoeter and Kyle Foxwell scoring inside the first 20 minutes.

Player of the Match Matt Milson, and Tyson Smoothy crossed before halftime to give the Seagulls a 22-0 lead going into the break.

Five-eighth Josh Rogers scored 5 minutes into the second half to extend the lead to 28-0.

Wynnum Manly were cruising at this point in front of a good Saturday afternoon home crowd.

Darius Farmer hits the ball up against PNG Hunters

However, two tries from the Hunters in the 51st and 57th minutes brought the game back to life.

PNG maintained their momentum and scored three more times in the final 15 minutes.

Goalkicking was the difference in the end, with the final score 28-24 to the Seagulls.

It was a disappointing finish for the Bayside boys considering how well they played in the first half. However, we did enough to get the two points, which was important in such a physically demanding game.

A special mention to John Radel who made his debut for the Hostplus Cup team. John is captain of our Hastings Deering Colts and has been in the Seagulls system for 3 years, including the Mal Meninga U18s.

Thank you to our Premier Partner, George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals, who presented our Round 10 gameday and gave away prizes to three Seagulls fans at halftime.

Now we head on a 4-match away run, including Tweed, Townsville, Mackay and Toowoomba. Our Colts and Hostplus Cup teams will play at 12pm and 2pm respectively on Saturday at Tweed Seagulls.

Our next home game at BMD Kougari Oval will be on Sunday 25 June against the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Seagulls Women Go Down in Grand Final

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls fell short at the final hurdle on Saturday in the BMD Premiership Grand Final.

In a gallant season, our women’s team fought back from losing the first two games to make the semi finals. They then went on to beat the undefeated Souths Logan Magpies in a thrilling game, and made their way into the grand final against the Burleigh Bears.

The stage was set for mammoth clash between the powerhouse Bears, and the Seagulls, who were in form and filled with talented players.

Burleigh broke out to an early lead, and then scored again out wide to move to 10-0. A sideline conversion pushed the lead to 12-0.

We were unlucky to lose Australian superstar Julia Robinson in the 17th minute to a hamstring injury, and have Kim Hunt denied a try for a double movement.

Kimmy got another chance just before half time and scored to lead us into the break down 12-6.

Wynnum Manly showed glimpses of how good they can be, but were a bit slow out of the blocks. The lively Seagulls supporters knew the girls were a great chance if they could start well in the second half.

Coach Ron Troutman must have spoke well at halftime, because our Seagulls were a much improved team to start the second half.

Kim Hunt was playing her best game of the season, and had a great run down the sideline, before scoring in the corner a few sets later.

The game was poised at 12-10 to Burleigh with the Seagulls coming home strongly. Our girls were looking better with each minute.

However, Burleigh were able to score from a Seagulls error twice in quick succession to seal the game late.

Our Seagulls continued to fight to the end, with many ending up with heavy knocks and injuries. But there was no one at the ground who could say the Seagulls didn’t give it everything they had.

The final score was 24-10 to Burleigh.

Our team had the goal of going one step better than last year, which they achieved by making the grand final. However, this loss will fuel the fire to go another step better in 2024.

Overall, it was a successful season for the Seagulls with multiple girls signing new NRLW contracts, and current NRLW superstars wanting to call Wynnum Manly home for the BMD Premiership season.

Our girls will be back bigger and better next season!

BMD Premiership Team Into GF

QRL article written by Rikki-Lee Arnold

The Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Burleigh Bears have advanced to the 2023 BMD Premiership grand final, after two thrilling semi-final clashes at Davies Park.

The Seagulls kicked off the action on semi-final Sunday, triumphing 30-28 over the competition leaders Souths Logan in an absolute nail-biter.

The ultimate underdogs – who finished the regular season in fourth place – handed the Magpies their first loss of the year, with a missed conversion the only difference between the two sides.

Wynnum Manly and Souths Logan scored five tries apiece, but it was the Seagulls who came bolting out of the gates early, with halfback Sienna Lofipo and centre Julia Robinson scoring within the first 13 minutes.

Souths Logan then hit back with a double to Georgia Wilson and an arm wrestle ensued, with the match going down to the wire.

Coach Ron Troutman said after the game the team had always been led by belief, even with a slow start that saw them lose their opening two matches.

“There’s been belief in the side all the year,” Troutman said.

“It’s the little things like our controllables where we let ourselves down but I’m of the opinion that we’ve been in every game of football.

“I’m very happy with today’s performance. I thought we started very well.

“We went through a period there where we sort of missed our mark a little bit on our completions … but I thought that we switched on and fought hard.

“It was very gritty. Both sides were very gritty.

“It’s our time now to enjoy this moment and then switch on to getting ready for next week.”

The Seagulls will now prepare for the grand final showdown with the Burleigh Bears at Logan Metro Sports Complex at 1.15pm on Saturday 13 May.

A Tough Day Out For Rivalry Round

BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls travelled to Kayo Stadium to take on the Redcliffe Dolphins on Sunday afternoon in the feature match of XXX Rivalry Round.

It was a tough day for the Seagulls across all grades, with the recent Dolphins NRL promotion providing strength across all their junior teams through to their Hostplus Cup team.

Kicking off at 2:10pm, the Seagulls were pleased to welcome Kalolo Saitaua and Brody Tamarua into the team for the first time in 2023.

The Seagulls started strongly with a clean break up the middle by Max Plath, however it was the Dolphins who opened the scoring in the 4th minute. Max then followed his break with our opening try a few minutes later when he bashed his way through multiple defenders to reach out and score.

Some handy footwork by Caius Faatili saw him break through the defensive line and set up Matt Milson who ran away to score on the very next set.

Matt Milson streaks away to score.

Unfortunately, 3 tries in 6 minutes to Redcliffe blew the game open and saw them lead 22-10 at half time.

Redcliffe opened the scoring in the second half to extend their lead, before the Seagulls hit back through Tony Pellow. Pellow caught a kick from close range and ran 95m to score, beating two diving attempts from Dolphins players to score a great individual try.

Caius Faatili then showed his great footwork again to create space and offload to Plath, who burrowed his way over for his second try.

Max Plath scores his second try to close the gap.

The Seagulls were right back in the contest at 28-22, with all the momentum, despite losing a couple of key players to injury early in the second half.

However, the Seagulls couldn’t capitalize on their newfound energy, and Redcliffe sealed the win with a try in the final minutes.

It was a brave performance from Wynnum Manly, down to two players on the bench against a talented side.

We are now looking forward to hosting the Dolphins at BMD Kougari Oval on 25 June to even the ledger.

Up next, the Seagulls will enjoy a break for Easter, before hosting Tweed on 16 April and Northern Pride on 22 April in consecutive home games.

Iona Remains a Seagulls’ Fortress

BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls enjoyed two strong wins on Saturday at our Premier Partner, Iona College.

In a community-focused match, Iona College hosted the Seagulls for the 3rd year in a row on their school grounds.

The Seagulls enjoyed great support from Iona staff, students and volunteers, both in the lead-up to the games and on the day itself.

A good crowd turned out for the BMD Premiership game at 1pm vs Norths Devils. Norths had some big names in their lineup and broke out to an early lead through 2 unconverted tries.

Our Women’s team hit back though, to level the scores and go into the break at 8-8.

The Seagulls started better in the second half with a great try to Emma Barnes, which opened the gates for another 3 Seagulls tries in 10 minutes.

Emma Barnes scores a great try to swing the momentum.

Final score 30-16, with Barnes scoring 2 tries, and Alyssa McCarthy, Sienna Lofipo, Emily Bass and Kim Hunt also getting on the scoresheet.

Our Hostplus Cup team were up next at 3pm. The Iona students formed a remarkable 50m tunnel to welcome the Seagulls to the field of play.

Brendan Frei leads the Seagulls through the Iona tunnel

It was one-way traffic from the beginning to end with the Seagulls putting on a dominant display.

Deine Mariner opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a shortside play from Matt Milson. He was in again 15 minutes later with an impressive solo effort which beat numerous Jets players.

Kitron Laka was his usual barnstorming self throughout the game, and barreled his way over in the 30th minute. Darius Farmer was up next with a nice 30m run from an inside short ball off Josh Rogers.

Josh Simm finished a great half when he scored in the corner after a Jets turnover. Halftime score, Seagulls leading 28-0.

Laka was over between the posts again in the 46th minute to start the second half just how the first one finished.

Mariner then scored another 2 tries, showing impressive footwork and strength to continue his domination of the left edge.

Deine Mariner streaks clear to open the scoring.

Jack Croft then scored his first Seagulls try in the 68th minute to cap a great day out for the Bayside boys. Josh Rogers kicked 7 from 9 conversions.

Deine Mariner, 18th man for the Broncos on Friday night, was a standout with 4 tries, while Brendan Frei was named Player of the Match.

Next week the Seagulls head to Redcliffe for QRL’s Rivalry Round, at 2pm on Sunday.
