2 Points Earned In Chinchilla

Match report presented by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls made the long trip out to Chinchilla for Sunday’s relocated game against the Western Clydesdales.

Coming off the previous weekend at North Stradbroke Island, it was back to back games with abnormal travel for our boys.

A reasonable crowd had rolled in to watch the Clydesdales home game, with local football matches as the curtainraiser to the Hostplus Cup game.

The Clydesdales opened the scoring with a runaway try in the 6th minute before a string of tries to Seagulls Connor Broadhurst, Luke Gale and Bryce Donovan stamped their authority on the game.

One more try to the Clydesdales before halftime brought the score to 18-10 to the Seagulls at the break.

The Seagulls started the second half with a bang, as Sione Hopoate put Kurt Falls in to score off a short ball close to the line within the opening minute.

Hopoate then had a try of his own as he forced his way over in the corner in the 54th minute. Seagulls led 28-10 at that stage.

However, the Clydesdales hit back with a try near the posts and were then awarded a penalty try to close the gap to 28-22.

5 minutes later, Kalolo Saitaua ran through untouched from a nice inside ball from Cory Paix to settle the Seagulls nerves.

Then Hopoate grabbed his second try when he regathered a Kurt Falls kick and scored in the corner. Score 40-22.

A couple of late tries to the Clydesdales brought the score closer than what our boys would have liked, but we’ll take the two points and move.

This Sunday we host the Burleigh Bears at BMD Kougari Oval in Round 12’s feature match.

This is a top of the table clash on Sunday at 2:10pm and we’d love to see as many Seagulls supporters there as possible.

Stradbroke Island Trip Finishes With A Win

Match report presented by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls travelled to North Stradbroke Island over the weekend for our annual Indigenous recognition match.

Our major partners for this game are Deadly Choices, Redland City Council, Yulu-Burri-Ba and Sealink, and once again, we could not have hosted such a successful day without their contributions.

Sunday morning saw 6 junior games take place on Ron Stark Oval, the home of the mighty Straddie Sharks, who also contributed greatly to our day.

The weather was perfect for football, with a light breeze coming off the ocean and not a cloud in the sky.

As the junior games finished, Deadly Choices ambassador Willie Tonga emceed a welcome ceremony for our players and supporters.

Straddie Youth Group performed some traditional dances before each of our stakeholders spoke on the importance of this game.

The Hostplus Cup kicked off at 3pm with a good crowd in attendance.

Kalolo Saitaua seals the game for the Seagulls

Wynnum Manly came firing out of the blocks as Jon Reuben scored 2 tries in the first 9 minutes.

The Falcons then scored 2 tries of their own as the first half turned into an even contest. The half time score read 12-10 Seagulls.

Kalolo Saitaua started the second half in style as he crashed through to score within the first minute.

However, the Falcons then scored two tries and hit the front for the first time in the game after 62 minutes.

The Seagulls wouldn’t give this one away easily though, as Player of the Match Matt Milson scored from dummy half at close range, and then Saitaua grabbed a double to seal the game.

The final score was 30-22 on a sunny Sunday on Stradbroke Island.

Matt Milson was awarded the Lionel Morgan medal for an outstanding game.

Wynnum Manly next take on the Western Clydesdales in Chinchilla on Sunday, before returning home to BMD Kougari Oval for a top of the table clash against Burleigh on Sunday 2 June.

Seagulls Overpower Jets At Home

Match Report presented by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

Saturday saw the Ipswich Jets come to BMD Kougari Oval for Round 9 of the Hostplus Cup.

On paper the Seagulls were expected to win, but with Ipswich’s new affiliation with the Gold Coast Titans, and their recent encouraging performances, they presented a difficult challenge.

The crowd swelled just before kickoff to ensure the Gulls would have their usual Chook Pen support.

Sefa Roache-Faimalo and Sione Hopoate scored first and second for the Seagulls to open up a 10-0 lead after 18 minutes.

Kurt Falls then scored to make it 16-0 after 31 minutes.

Ipswich hit back just before halftime to make it 16-4 at the break.

Wynnum Manly continued the second half the way they started the first as a consistent run of tries took the game away from Ipswich.

Kalolo Saitaua scored in the 51st minute, then Connor Broadhurst in the 57th, Sefa Roache-Faimalo again in the 63rd and then Kurt Falls got his double and sealed the game in the 75th minute.

Similar to the first half, the Jets scored a late consolation try.

The final score was 40-8 to the Seagulls who entertained the Chook Pen crowd on a great Saturday afternoon.

Our next game is at Ron Stark Oval, North Stradbroke Island, 3pm Sunday against the Sunshine Coast Falcons. This is an Indigenous recognition match supported by Deadly Choices, Redland City Council and Yulu-Burri-Ba.

Saturday saw our Mal Meninga Cup U19s take on the Burleigh Bears in the semi final of the competition.

The Seagulls were looking forward to the challenge of taking on a team that had won 130-0 the weekend prior.

And considering it was 18-12 to Burleigh at halftime, the Seagulls we well and truly in the game.

Wynnum scored first after half time to get within two points, however a few late second half tries consolidated Burleigh’s lead.

The game ended 34-20 to Burleigh, with the Seagulls putting up a great fight.

Wynnum lost their first 3 games of the season to be last on the ladder, and then proceeded to win 6 of their next 7 games to make the semi final.

A great effort by coach Daryl Short and his playing group for the 2024 season.

On Sunday, our BMD Premiership and Hostplus Cup teams headed down to Piggabeen to face the Tweed Seagulls in the ‘Flockbuster’.

Our BMD Premiership held on for an important win in the context of their season. They needed to win in Round 8 and again this weekend to play finals football.

26-20 was the final score. Jayda Lofipo was named Player of the Match

Up next, our Hostplus Cup team took to the field after a huge downpour. Not long after, the field turned to mud and the players were almost unrecognisable.

Wynnum Manly hit front early and held on to win 40-16. Cory Paix was named Player of the Match and Jon Reuben had a memorable day with 4 tries on the wing.

The Seagulls are back at home this Saturday for 2 matches in the BMD Premiership and Hostplus Cup.

Our women take on the Sunshine Coast at 1:20pm and then our Hostplus Cup team take on the Ipswich Jets at 3pm.

Weekend Wrap

BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls travelled to Mackay over the weekend for 3 matches against the Cutters.

In the first match, our Mal Meninga U19 team flew up and back in a day to face a Cutters team that hadn’t conceded more than 3 tries in a game all season. And the boys from the North scored in the 1st minute to shock the Seagulls.

However a Charlie Johnstone hattrick within 20 minutes pushed the Seagulls out to an 18-4 lead, despite having a man in the sin-bin for 10 minutes within that period.

Isopo Taunu’u grabbed a try just after halftime to send Wynnum to a 24-4 lead. Then Beni Allen put the game beyond reach with a 48th minute try.

A couple of late consolation tries to the Cutters brought the final score to 32-18, with the Seagulls continuing their recent momentum, having won 5 of their last 6 games.

The BMD Premiership were up next, with the Cutters undefeated and our Seagulls missing a number of regular starters through injury.

The Seagulls were in the game at 14-4 at half time, but the Cutters proved too strong running in 6 tries to 2.

Emily Bass and Jayda Lofipo scored for the Seagulls, but unfortunately our girls slip out of the Top 4 after two losses in a row.

With plenty of talent due back in the team over the coming weeks, our BMD Premiership team will make a strong push for the finals.

The Hostplus Cup players ran out to a good crowd at BB Print Stadium to see two teams in the Top 4 battle it out.

The Cutters scored early before Sefa Roache-Faimalo hit back for the Seagulls in the 18th minute.

Mackay then scored twice in eight minutes to break out to a 14-6 lead, before Broncos-contracted Cory Paix scored for the Seagulls just before halftime.

The halftime score was 14-12 to Mackay.

Luke Gale continued his good form and crashed over the line immediately after halftime to put the Seagulls in front 18-14.

However, not long after, Mackay again scored twice in eight minutes to hit the front 24-18.

The next 15 minutes saw a tug-of-war for momentum as the Seagulls looked to hit back, but ultimately a couple of penalty goals in the 71st and 74th minutes to Mackay extended their lead.

Cory Paix scored a late try to give the Seagulls some hope, even more so when a Cutters played was sin binned off the ensuing kickoff. But the Seagulls couldn’t find that killer blow in the final few minutes, and the game finished 28-24 to Mackay.

Wynnum Manly fall a few places on the ladder but are very much in the hunt given the evenness of the competition.

A well-earned weekend off for the Seagulls approaches, before facing Tweed on Sunday 5 May. Our BMD Premiership and Mal Meninga teams are back at BMD Kougari Oval this Sunday 28 April.

Weekend Wrap

Over the weekend, the Seagulls Mal Meninga U19 and Hostplus Cup teams made the trip to Townsville to face the Blackhawks.

The U19s had the unfortunate challenge of travelling to Townsville Saturday morning, heading straight to the ground to play and then flying home after the game to return to Wynnum Saturday night.

The big trip didn’t affect their energy level as they came bursting out of the blocks to score twice in the first 5 minutes. The Seagulls dominance continued as they took a 26-0 lead into the half time break.

Eager to continue their winning streak, our boys put the foot down in the second half to run away 44-6 winners.

Our Hostplus Cup team followed the Mal Meninga U19s at Jack Manski Oval in Townsville. The Blackhawks were first to score, before Sione Hopoate and Luke Gale scored in quick succession to give the Gulls a 10-6 lead.

Another pair of tries within 7 minutes to Sefa Roache-Faimalo and Kurt Falls, finished the half on a high as the Seagulls led 22-6 at halftime. The Seagulls momentum continued after the break as they scored 3 tries in the first 16 minutes to lead 38-6.

However, Wynnum then relaxed somewhat on defence with the game essentially done. The Blackhawks went on to score 4 tries in 11 minutes to bring the score to 38-30.

A late penalty to Bryce Donovan settled the Seagulls nerves and took the score to 40-30, where it stayed until full time.

A successful trip to Townsville for our two men’s teams, returning to the Bayside with all 4 points.

On Sunday, our BMD Premiership women’s team hosted the Burleigh Bears at BMD Kougari Oval in a 2023 grand final rematch.

The Seagulls were missing 4 representative players through injury/suspension but were confident they could match it with Burleigh.

Burleigh led 14-6 at the half time break, but Sienna Lofipo scored a great try just after halftime to get the Seagulls back in the game. Lilly Green scored next and put the Seagulls in front 16-14. However, Burleigh went on to score twice and lead 22-16.

Prue Peters scored a late ty for the Seagulls to make it 22-20 and unfortunately our girls couldn’t score again as they went down by 2 points in an entertaining game.

The Seagulls had a couple of key injuries resulting in players having to leave the field. It was a great effort from our girls, who battled through under the circumstances.

All 3 teams travel to Mackay this weekend to face the Cutters. You can watch all the games on QPlus.tv

3 Wins From 3 Against Devils

Weekend Wrap presented by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

The predicted rain stayed away from the Bayside on Saturday as the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls welcomed the Norths Devils from across the river for 3 matches.

The first game saw our Mal Meninga Cup U19 boys go try for try in the first half. However, a stirring speech from coach Daryl Short kicked our Gulls into gear as they ran away in the second half to win 46-22.

Up next were the exciting BMD Premiership team, coming off a surprise loss last game and looking to make amends. The Seagulls were the better team throughout the game but missed a few opportunities to convert their dominance into points. The Seagulls led 10-6 at halftime but fell behind 16-14 in the last 10 minutes. Winger Jo-Anne Visser rescued her team with try in the 65th minute to put the Gulls in front 18-16, which remained the final score.

The Hostplus Cup were the final game of the day with two in-form teams on display. Winger Sione Hopoate got the Seagulls off to a cracking start when he opened the scoring in the 2nd minute. The Devils hit back 6 minutes later before a Seagulls double to Hopoate and Delouise Hoeter extended the lead to 16-12. Matt Milson went in for the home side just before the break to bring the score to 22-12.

The Devils were first to score in the second half before Hoeter scored again for Wynnum to reestablish the 10 point lead. Dolphins-contracted Tesi Niu scored for the Devils in the 75th minute to give them some hope, but the Seagulls ran out 26-20 winners.

Three wins from three games on Saturday for the Seagulls – a very successful day for the Bayside club.

Our next home match is on Sunday 14 April, which is a standalone BMD Premiership Women’s match. Our Hostplus Cup and Mal Meninga teams head to Townsville to play on Saturday afternoon.

Weekend Wrap

Weekend Wrap presented by GHM Funerals

Sunday saw the return of Rivalry Round to BMD Kougari Oval, as the BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls faced the Redcliffe Dolphins. On a rain-soaked afternoon where umbrellas and jackets were flying out of our merchandise stand, a surprisingly good crowd came through the gates to be part of the Seagulls Old Gulls Day. This game is always a competitive clash between two bitter rivals.

The McDonalds Seagulls Academy teams kicked off early, with the Dolphins proving too good in the Cyril Connell, Mal Meninga and Harvey Norman U19. That was the final game of the season for our Cyril Connell Cup and Harvey Norman U19, both of which just missed the finals in 2024.

Our BMD Premiership Women played against the Brisbane Tigers in the 4th game of the day as they looked to continue their unbeaten run. In a tight match with increased handling errors due to the rain, our Seagulls defended very well and looked the better team. Unfortunately they couldn’t get their attack firing and the game remained 6-6 for a long period.

A late penalty to the Tigers proved the difference as they held on to win 8-6 over the Seagulls.

Prior to Hostplus Cup kickoff, the Seagulls paid respect to 9 club legends that had passed away over the offseason, all making various contributions to the club over many years.

The crowd swelled late and it didn’t take long for the Seagulls to show their intent on Old Gulls Day, with big Cooper Page Wilson barrelling over from close range to open the scoring in the 4th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, the Seagulls were in again, as Connor Broadhurst fooled the Redcliffe defence to sneak down the short side and dive over untouched. Seagulls led 12-0 after 13 minutes.

But anyone who knows the rivalry between these two clubs, knew that the Dolphins wouldn’t go away easily. They had a bigger forward pack and have a strong team this season through their affiliation with the Dolphins NRL team. And hit back they did in the 20th minute through NRL-contracted Valynce Te Whare. And the again 10 minutes later to bring the score to 12-12 after 30 minutes.

The continuous rain couldn’t dampen the crowd, as they knew a big finish was to come. The Seagulls opened the scoring in the second half, similar to the first, as winger Sione Hopoate crossed for a try. Bryce Donovan converted and took to lead to 18-12.

The game went back and forth for the next 20 minutes, with great defence from both sides, as well as a few handling errors in the wet. The Seagulls broke the stalemate as they scored again in the 73rd minute to all but seal the game. Fullback Matt Milson, on the comeback from injury, finished off a great team try to extend the Seagulls lead to 22-12.

And that is where the score remained as the Seagulls closed out the game for a great Rivalry Round result.

All competitions take a break over Easter, with the next home game on Saturday 6 April for our Hostplus Cup, BMD Premiership and Mal Meninga Cup.

This weekend saw only one Seagulls team in action, with our BMD Premiership team travelling to Rockhampton to take on the Central QLD Capras.

Our Harvey Norman U17 girls team finished up last weekend after a 4 game season. Unfortunately the girls lost each game, but they have enjoyed the season and will be back bigger and better next year.

Our other four teams rested over a bye this weekend.

Meanwhile in Rocky, our girls weathered the storm in the early part on the game as the score remained 0-0 after 20 minutes.

Then 3 tries in 7 minutes, scored by Lilly Green, Julia Robinson and Destiny Mino-Sinapati, saw the Seagulls explode to a 14-0 lead, which they maintained at halftime.

Karina Brown then scored immediately after halftime and the Seagulls led 18-0.

Then the Capras began their comeback, scoring 3 consecutive tries to get within 2 points of the Seagulls, 18-16.

Despite having a player in the sin bin, Wynnum scored again through Destiny Mino-Sinapati, with Brianna Clark converting to extend the lead to 24-22.

The Capras scored a late try to again narrow the gap to 2 points, but our Seagulls held on to win 24-22 in a thrilling game.

Destiny Mino-Sinapati was voted TFH Player of the Match and QLD X-Ray Player’s Player.

Weekend Wrap

Weekend Wrap brought to you by George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals.

All six Seagulls teams were on show on Saturday across two venues.

Our McDonalds Seagulls Academy teams hosted the Burleigh Bears at BMD Kougari Oval in Round 3. While our Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership teams travelled to Toowoomba to take on the Western Clydesdales in their final trial matches before Round 1.

Cyril Connell Cup boys were up first, with our Seagulls looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season. It wasn’t to be as Burleigh got the win 26-18.

Mal Meninga Cup was up next, and Burleigh proved too strong as they went on to win 36-18.

Harvey Norman U17 girls were the third game as the Seagulls looked to get their first win of the day. Unfortunately Burleigh were too strong again, and won 20-14.

The final match of the day at BMD Kougari Oval was the Harvey Norman U19 girls, as the rain that had threatened all day started to fall. The game was 0-0 at halftime, with Burleigh eventually finishing stronger to win 18-4.

Over in Toowoomba, our BMD Premiership women kicked off against the Western Clydesdales in their second trial of 2024. Strong performances from Emma Barnes, Jayde Herdegen and Indee Brown led the way to a Seagulls victory, 16-14.

Our Hostplus Cup team then kicked off their second trial match this season, following their game against the Brisbane Broncos two weeks ago. The Seagulls ran away 46-6 victors, showing a lot of positive signs heading into Round 1 on March 9 in Papua New Guinea.

A special mention to five of our Hostplus Cup squad who were selected by the Broncos to play in their trial match down in Manly. Kurt Falls, Cooper Page Wilson, Josh Stuckey, Kalolo Saitaua and Sione Hopoate all worn the maroon and white, instead of the red and green, as they comfortably beat the Manly Sea Eagles to help the Broncos win the 2024 Pre-Season Challenge.

This Saturday, the Gulls are back in action as we head down the highway to face Souths Logan Magpies across 5 games.

Details below:
1pm – Harvey Norman U17
2:30pm – Cyril Connell Cup
4pm – Harvey Norman U19
5:30pm – Mal Meninga Cup
